Council Update December 2013

Council has authorized an application to the Minister of Municipal Affairs for a Ministerial Order to extend the deadline for holding a by-election to fill the Council vacancy on Monday, February 24, 2014.

The Town Council organizational meeting was held with Council Butch Howard being elected to the position of Deputy Mayor. Councillors then picked the committees they wish to serve on. The listing is too large to be included in this newsletter. Interested citizens are encouraged to contact the municipal office or any of your elected representatives should you wish a copy of these committees.

*Mayor Haarstad Petten and Councillors Davey and Howard were authorized to attend the Alberta Urban Municipalities Conference in Calgary November 18 – 22.

*Council members will be attending an Elected Officials Emergency Management course on November 29 at the Lacombe County offices.
*Mayor Haarstad Petten and Councillor Howard were appointed to the Bentley Emergency Services Committee. This is the committee that oversees the construction of the new fire hall and will be disbanded once the fire hall is completed.

*A tax penalty on Lot 3, Block 14, Plan 132U was cancelled as it was levied in error.

*Approval to reimburse expenses in the amount of $1,515 and ice rental fees was given to the Bentley Generals Hockey team due to the cancellation of their October 26 game due to ice problems. Parkland Hockey League were also reimbursed their rental fees.

*Bentley Municipal Library requested some upgrades to the exterior of the building. This item was deferred to budget deliberations and to give staff time to provide cost estimates.

*August, September and October monthly waterworks summary reports were received for information with no concerns.

*Canada Day – the Bentley Firefighters Foundation have disbanded and asked Council to consider spear-heading the annual Canada Day celebrations. After discussion, Administration were asked to forward letters to local groups to find out if there would be interest in working together to organize this popular event. Replies are to be received by the end of December. This item will again be discussed in January.

*The manner in how Council reporting their monthly activities was discussed.
*Annual memberships were renewed for the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and the Red Deer River Watershed Alliance.

*Council were authorized to attend the Disaster of Social Services information night hosted by the Canadian Red Cross on November 27 in Red Deer.

*A proposal from Rolyat Corporation Ltd. To conduct a team building exercise in the amount of $650 was received for information only.

*Councillor Howard will represent Council on the Sylvan Lake & Area Family Care Clinic committee.

*Ms. Kim Schmidt was appointed to the Bentley Municipal Library Board.

*Answers to questions regarding the Renew Bioenergy Inc. open house was received for information. Should citizens wish to have a copy of this document, please contact the Municipal Office or your elected officials.

*A letter of approval from the Community Facility Enhancement Program for Bentley Minor Hockey and Ringette Association’s application was received. The funds of $43,947 will be matched with the Kraft Hockeyville, Bentley Minor Hockey and Bentley Rodeo Association funds that have been set aside to purchase a new ice re-surfacer (Zamboni) in the near future.
